Environmental education program in Romania

Romania is still home to vast forests and stretches of low-intensitv cultural landscape, harboring numerous species that are endangered or regionally extinct in Western Europe. This includes species requiring huge home ranges such as Brown Bears and Wolves.
Romania’s EU membership and the subsequent economic growth pose a threat to the wild natural landscape as high intensity agriculture and ongoing development encroach upon these remote areas.

Raising public awareness about nature’s values and nature conservation is urgently required, which is why CICONIA is planning to initiate an environmental education project in Romania. The project will be launched in Transsylvania and later extended to other regions across the country. This project will include:

  • Environmental education using the White Stork as a flagship species
  • Specific species conservation measures for White and Black Storks
