Conservation project on the Loukkos’ estuary

Large wetlands still remain along the lower course of the Loukkos river near Larache in northwest Morocco that represent a vital stop-over for countless migratory birds including many central- and northwest European White Storks. The wetlands have, in the meantime, been declared a RAMSAR-site, thanks in part to CICONIA’s support.

CICONIA assisted the bird conservation research group GREPOM with developing a feasible conservation project. GREPOM was represented by Mohammed Aziz El Agbani, of the University of Rabat. The projects objectives are listed below.

  • A feasibility study of the conservation of the Loukkos wetlands with special consideration for the needs of the local people. (2001-2002)
  • Scientific surverys of local flora and fauna
  • Conceiving management measures for wetland conservation
  • Raising public awareness of the conservation area
  • Compiling fundamentals of an environmental education program
  • Listing opportunities for ecotourism
