Conservation project on the Loukkos’ estuary
Large wetlands still remain along the lower course of the Loukkos river near Larache in northwest Morocco that represent a vital stop-over for countless migratory birds including many central- and northwest European White Storks. The wetlands have, in the meantime, been declared a RAMSAR-site, thanks in part to CICONIA’s support.
CICONIA assisted the bird conservation research group GREPOM with developing a feasible conservation project. GREPOM was represented by Mohammed Aziz El Agbani, of the University of Rabat. The projects objectives are listed below.
- A feasibility study of the conservation of the Loukkos wetlands with special consideration for the needs of the local people. (2001-2002)
- Scientific surverys of local flora and fauna
- Conceiving management measures for wetland conservation
- Raising public awareness of the conservation area
- Compiling fundamentals of an environmental education program
- Listing opportunities for ecotourism
