First breeding record of White Storks in Liechtenstein

CICONIA supports the return of the White Stork to Liechtenstein through placement of nesting platforms and minor habitat improvement projects. As a result a pair of White Storks nested on a tree platform near the Ruggeller Riet in 2007 and successfully raised one young. This was the first successful breeding record in Liechtenstein after an absence of over 100 years. 2012 marked the sixth straight year of White Storks breeding in that very same nest.

A second platform at the Aufhof in Schaan has been occupied by a second pair since 2009 and represents the southernmost nesting site in the alpine Rhine valley.

In 2012 there were 5 successful breeding pairs in Liechtenstein.

CICONIA closely collaborates with the Rhine Valley Stork Association on this project.
